Hair Drive

at Avant
(see details below)
At Avant
Salons and Spa, we make it a regular practice to use our time, talent, and
services to support local and national charitable organizations. Locks of Love
is another wonderful opportunity for us.

“Locks of
Love” is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to
financially disadvantaged children, under age 18, suffering from long-term
medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Who can donate?
- Men, women, and children can donate their hair as long as the guidelines
listed below are followed. In fact, according to Locks of Love statistics, most
hair donors are children.
Guidelines
for acceptable hair donations
- Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
- Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been
stored in a ponytail or braid.
- Hair that has been bleached is not usable.
If unsure, ask your stylist.
- Hair that is swept off of the floor is not
usable.
- Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail
or braid is not usable.
- We cannot accept dreadlocks.
- We also cannot accept wigs, falls, hair
extensions or synthetic hair.
- Layered hair is acceptable if the longest
layer is 10 inches.
- Layered hair may be divided into multiple
ponytails.
- 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum
length needed for a hairpiece.
- Gray hair will be accepted and sold to offset
the manufacturing costs.
- Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure
the minimum 10 inches.
Your hair
donations will be turned into natural-looking wigs for kids. Where as synthetic
wigs "look fake" like doll hair, donated human hair achieves a
realistic, natural appearance.
Through Locks of Love
kids regain assurance in their appearance, feeling brighter about the outlook
for their future. With renewed confidence, these children will go out in
public, without feeling self-conscious. They will look proudly in the mirror,
feeling like themselves again.
What causes
hair loss and how the wigs (known as prosthetics) are made.
The most common cause of
hair loss, according to Locks of Love, is Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune
deficiency disease that affects over 4 million people in the United States,
two million of whom are children. There is no known cause or cure for Alopecia
Areata.
"Basically, your
body develops an allergy to your hair," said Susan Stone, Locks of Love
Executive Director. Others have
suffered severe burns, or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem, in
addition to many other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair
loss.
Obtaining a wig
generally takes four months. Applicants for wigs receive a plaster-of-paris
mold kit and video by mail. The child makes a skin-to-plaster head mold and
returns it to the manufacturing plant.
Using 140,000 strands of
real hair, wigs are handmade using silicon caps to match each child's skin
tone. The custom-made silicon allows for a perfect fit, making it impossible
to pull off. Kids can go swimming, they can hang upside-down on the monkey
bars, they can lead a normal life.
Children can choose
their desired hair length and color. Such wigs are known as prosthetics and
are worth up to $6,000.
Locks of Love provide
these hairpieces and repairs free of charge or on a sliding scale based on the
financial need of those responsible for the children.
